natural birth
I get many emails from young mothers, some pregnant with their first child, saying that they are very afraid of giving birth naturally. The main reason: they think they cannot cope with the pain. Some are so scared that they state they would never even consider to give birth naturally. The fact that they sit down and write an email shows that deep inside they wish they would. Maybe they hope that I will disperse their doubts and fears? I can’t.
The only thing I can do, is to encourage you to “dig deep inside”, to listen closely to your inner voice that will tell you your truth! And if, on this path, you encounter some of your fears – well, meet them, look them into the eyes, explore why they are there.
Birth is a natural process! We women are built for it. We are not – originally – designed to have a caesarian. The mind created a great emergency-tool that helped a lot of children to come to this physical plane. Without caesarian many children (and mothers) would not be alive. However, the emphasis in my view lies on the word EMERGENCY.
On a physical level birth can be a painless, ecstatic transition – yes, painless, I have experienced this with my son Noa. While researching for my book Geburt – Wiederentdeckung des weiblichen Weges I met an African healer and shaman. I asked her about herbs and medicinal plants that would help with labour pain, and I will never forget the surprised look in her eyes when she said: “Pain, why pain? Birth is not painful.”
But what about all those horrifying stories about hours and hours of pain? Fear creates tension, on a physical and emotional level. And tension creates pain, on a physical and emotional level. So if we deal with our inner fears – face them, embrace them, are with them – we can create a fear-less and therefore pain-less birth.
Our children will help us with this.
For all moms and moms-to-be out there (and for all dads, too, of course!), please try the following:
1. Find out what mind-pictures/conceptions you have in regards to giving birth (e.g. are your friends, relatives, doctor, etc. telling you how painfull birth can be and that you have to be well prepared and know about all the risks, etc., etc.?) If you have a rather negative perception of birth (which is likely, otherwise you would not need to think about this), be aware of it.
2. Imagine your “dream-birth”. How would you want to welcome your child if your fears and worries would not be an issue? In a hospital environment or somewhere else? Imagine it in every detail and let your thoughts run free! Be aware that you have a choice. You can and will create your reality according to your thoughts, mind-pictures and expectations.
3. Communicate with your unborn child. For some this might sound strange. Just play around with it. Your child will love it – he/she is waiting for it!
Let your gut feeling guide you. There is no recipe or how-to-guide: some just talk to the child, some close their eyes and write down what they “hear”, some play music, create art work/paintings, etc. We are all different. The important thing is: DO IT! Get in contact with your child in any way you feel drawn to. Ask him/her questions! The answers will come. Always. Be open to their form. You might receive thoughts, ideas, “hear” a voice inside of you, draw something – the forms are as diverse as we are.
If you want to you can also watch these films that give you an encouraging vision of how birth can be. However, always remember that it is totally UP TO YOU, how you want to create the birth of your child. ENJOY THIS UNIQUE AND SACRED MOMENT!

Autism, hyperactivity, dyslexia, gifted, talented children - they show us new ways
I think that all beings have a special message and task to fulfil on this planet. Like single threads in a web each one is needed to form a bigger whole. To be able to live in a healthy balance we have to consider this interconnectedness.
Over the last few years I have spoken with many teachers, educators, parents, caregivers, social workers. Everyone who is dealing with children observe an increasing number of children who show behavioural peculiarities. These peculiarities take on different forms and are challenging us. We labelled them to be able to categorize them: autism, dyslexia, gifted/talented children, hyperactivity, etc. However, there is one thing they all have in common: they “disrupt” our existing systems. They don’t work anymore with those children. We try to apply established and familiar methods to “help” the children to fit into the norm again. We try hard to press them back into the mould to become respected and well-functioning members of society – for their own benefit. How else can they be successful in an environment that has set certain rules and expects you to function accordingly!
Well, I personally am convinced that these children took on the huge task to make us see that there are other ways of doing things, other perspectives. By being out of balance and interrupting our well established structures they show us that our existing systems are out of balance and not embracing the diversity of life. If we listen closely and observe carefully we can hear and see their message clearly! Our whole lifestyle is under question – from nutrition to recreation. If our systems were healthy and balanced our methods and various attempts to guide these children back would be more successful. But this time even drugs do not help!
I have a deep respect and admiration for these children who are brave enough to hold up the mirror for us to see. By numbing them with TV programs, recreational programs, school programs, medical programs we are not supporting them, but ignoring the very reason why they are here. From my experience, these children react immediately to impulses that nurture and acknowledge a reconnection with Nature. Impulses that nurture the soul aspect, the connection to the universal source of life. Aspects of life that balance out the current mind-oriented path of many lives. We have achieved great things with the mind – now we can integrate the neglected soul aspects and live a new healthy synthesis where the energies are balanced. I think this is the huge chance of this era, culminating in 2012, and these brave children are here to make us aware and guide us. May we listen and observe :)

Earth Whisperers/Papatuanuku
The latest documentary by Kathleen Gallagher was filmed at spectacular locations around Aotearoa, New Zealand. 10 inspiring personalities of Aotearoa reflect on their relationship with Mother Earth and how a shift in consciousness can heal our environment and therefore ourselves: among others Barry Brailsford (Song of Waitaha), Richard Nunns (extraordinary musician who focuses on traditional Maori music), Craig Potton, Alan Mark, Keri Hulme...
If you get a chance to see this touching film - take it!
Nelson 5th June 2009, 7 pm, Suter Theatre
Another opportunity to see inspiring films certainly is the "Environment Film Festival" in Nelson, 30th of July until 9th of August 2009.
